Annual Meeting set for November 17, call for volunteers: The AU-Hawaii Board is soliciting members to step-forward to serve on the board and handle some of the usual administrative matters related to maintaining accurate financial accounts. The Treasurer has set up an easy-to-maintain system for any member interested in handling the job. Volunteers with WEB-making expertise are also needed as well as folks willing to handle various aspects of our quarterly newsletter.
The Board meets quarterly (four times a year) and conducts a lot of its business by e-mail, by phone and by our secure Message Board, so Oahu, Maui, Kauai and Molokai members should not be shy to step forward to volunteer. Send an e-mail note to our Secretary at: au_hawaii@yahoo.com so that he can place your name on the agenda at our annual general membership meeting in November when we elect officers and directors for the upcoming fiscal year (Nov. 2001-Nov. 2002). Mahalo in advance!

Americans United Re-Affirms Commitment to Religious Liberty

The 200-member Hawaii Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, reaffirmed its commitment to religious liberty and the First Amendment of the United States Constitution when its Hawaii Board of Directors approved a motion by Edward Clark, Chapter President, to support Rev. Jonathan Adler in his current effort to practice his religion while using cannabis as an integral part of his church services.

The board action was taken at the Americans United Hawaii Chapter's third quarterly meeting held last night at the residence of Edward Clark, Chapter President, in Puna.

Edward Clark, who does not use cannabis, pointed out that the fundamental purpose of Americans United is to support religious liberty. Clark was one of the leaders in the successful fight last month to stop the Board of Education effort to allow the teaching of
creationism as a science in Hawaii schools.

He teamed up with Rev. Barry Lynn, Executive Director of Americans United, to submit one of the most thorough legal briefs to the Board of Education on the issue of creationism and public education.

Americans United is a non-partisan, tax-exempt educational organization that defends the constitutional rights of citizens and taxpayers as well as the independence of religious institutions. The Hawaii Chapter was established two years ago and
is based on the Big Island.

The Hawaii Chapter's fourth quarterly Board and General Membership meeting, which is open to the public, is scheduled for November 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the UH-Hilo Campus Center. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Americans United UH Chapter headed by UH junior, Patrick Boswell and sophomore Rick Champion.

Quarterly Newsletter is in the mail, Aug. 14: Our 8-page quarterly newsletter is in the mail to all paid-up AU members, and it should be in your mailbox by tomorrow (Wed. Aug. 15).

If you do NOT get a copy by this Friday (Aug. 17), it means that you need to send in your annual dues to AU National HQ which supplies us with the mailing labels. If you want a copy, please send us a snail-mail message, hopefully with a 34 cent stamp in it so that we can mail it to you. If you're broke and can't afford the 34 cent stamp, send us an e-mail message and give us your snail mail address and we'll mail the latest copy to you for free. (We'll do this as long as we don't get deluged with with such requests since each copy costs us close to 75 cents to print and mail.)

Please do it right away! Your dues (half of which comes back to our local chapter) helps to pay for the printing and postage. Mahalo in advance for your kokua. Check your "inbox" for a letter from AU with return envelop for your renewal. If you lost it, just send your tax-deductible $25 check directly to: Americans United, 518 C St., N.E., Washington, D.C. 2002. Do NOT send money to us. Be sure to write a note on your check that you are a Hawaii member. Otherwise, they won't send back half of it to us to help pay for our quarterly hardcopy newsletters and other AU related activities. :) I
